How Does the Bible View Itself?
The inerrancy debate drove individuals from all sides back to the Bible in an attempt to determine what, if anything, Scripture claims about itself. Does the Bible take a stand on the quality or extent of its own reliability? In the segments below, James Barr and John Murray present opposing interpretations regarding biblical claims to inerrancy. While these are only two arguments among many on the topic, most theologians involved in the debate either sided with Barrâs position73 or Murrayâs.74 Both excerpts contain important keys to each side of the debate. Barr denies an inherent unity to the Bible. Murray considers the strongest case for inerrancy to be the testimony of Jesus to Scripture.
